![]() Most helles are nicely hopped, many pilsners are not. I’m not even sold on hop bitterness being a big difference. The idea that Helles is a Munich thing and Pils is from somewhere else does not even remotely play out in the real world. ![]() The theory about minerals doesn’t hold either, since brewers in Germany often make both. In a random sampling of Bavarian brewers who make both, the results clearly debunk this theory: Yeah, I have no idea where the ABV thing comes from. Some styles are better than others, though I have certainly had some spectacular helles, particularly at the Sandlot.Īmong Munich beers, I can’t see any sign of a higher ABV in Pils: Pilsner is just generally a better beer in my opinion. Helles generally have lower abv, less bitterness, less AA, and more CaCo3 from the Munich water, giving a more minerally (firmer) mouth feel.
